Pass the Buck

Leslie Buck, the inventor of this ionic cup (called the Anthora cup), died today, aged 87.

Even the Times said in their obituary : “It is as vivid an emblem of the city as the Statue of Liberty, beloved of property masters who need to evoke Gotham at a glance in films and on television.”

Whats great about stuff like the Anthora cup, is that they have the advantages of vivid design, and a strong nostalgic quality. This is true of lots of great props. A great number 2 pencil, for example: the yellow body with the pink eraser. Someone designed that. A deck of bicycle playing cards, a can of Budweiser…

That said, my favorite use of the Anthora cup? In a production of An Oresteia (because its Greek… get it?).
